Located on the East Bank of the Nile River, the town of Akhmim has been a center for textile weaving since the Pharaonic era. Despite the industry’s move towards mechanized textiles, Akhmim still focusses on hand-weaving techniques, some using large wooden looms that take up to four people to operate. Akhmim holds a weekly textile market, where local weavers sell items like galabeyas and shawls, worn by men in the Egyptian countryside.
